Bixby Reaches Putnam City’s Consolation Finals

Bixby’s Lady Spartans faced a sizeable deficit entering the fourth quarter against the Oklahoma City Storm during Saturday’s consolation semifinal game in the annual Putnam City Invitational Basketball Tournament at Putnam West High’s gymnasium.

The Lady Spartans battled back to outscore the Storm, 15-7, in the final frame to tie the game at 56-all and force overtime. A clutch three-pointer by guard Maddie Bittle tied the game in regulation.

Bixby seized control in the overtime session, outscoring the Storm 8-3 to capture a 65-59 victory and earn a berth in Monday’s (Jan. 9) consolation championship game against Southmoore.

“We had to come from eight down late in the fourth quarter against the Storm and Bittle tied the game with a three-pointer,” said Lady Spartan head coach Tina Thomas.

Bittle led Bixby in scoring with 26 points while teammate Savanna Stout contributed 12 points and Sarah Tyree chipped in with 11. Kyndal Pirtle added six, Sydney Page and Kennedy Brown four each and Cassidy Sloan one.

Bixby suffered a tough 57-52 loss to Putnam City in the tourney opener. The Lady Spartans trailed 23-22 at half but built a 39-32 advantage going into the fourth quarter. Putnam City, however, outscored Bixby, 24-13, in the final frame to pull out the victory.

Bittle and Tyree finished in double figures for the Lady Spartans with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Pirtle and Stout each scored six points and Sloan contributed four points.

Southmoore fell to Edmond Memorial, 49-28, in its first round game before knocking off Putnam City North, 46-38, to reach the consolation finals. Tulsa Union and Putnam West will play for the tourney championship while Putnam West and Edmond Memorial play for third place.

After wrapping up tourney play Monday against Southmoore, the Lady Spartans, 4-6 return to Frontier Valley Conference play, hosting Bartlesville Tuesday (Jan. 10) and visiting Sand Springs on Friday (Jan. 13).
