Bixby Girls Romp Twice, Hosting Regional

By Ron Holt

Tenth-ranked Bixby turned up the offensive and defensive pressure early in rolling past Bishop Kelley, 61-45, last Friday night in Kelley’s gymnasium.

It was the second straight win for the Lady Spartans who avenged an earlier 44-39 home court loss to Sapulpa with an impressive 74-58 romp past the 19th-ranked Lady Chieftains last Tuesday (Feb. 6) at Sapulpa.

Bixby, 14-6 on the season, plays its third straight road game Tuesday, Feb. 13, when the Lady Spartans visit Tulsa Union. BHS returns home for the regular season finale Friday, Feb. 16, hosting Broken Arrow in the Senior Night game. Seniors Maddie Bittle and Sarah Tyree, along with their parents, will be honored.

Four points by Bittle and a three-pointer by freshman Landry Williams lifted Bixby to an early 7-2 lead. The Lady Spartans scored the final nine points of the first quarter for a 16-2 lead. Bittle and Williams each scored six points in the quarter while Tyree and Sydney Page each contributed two.

Bixby led 26-9 late in the second quarter before Bishop Kelley narrowed the deficit to 26-15 with 1:05 remaining. A three-pointer and layup by Bittle in the final minute lifted the Lady Spartans to a 31-15 halftime advantage.

Kelley became more offensive after halftime and trimmed Bixby’s lead to 35-28 midway through the third period before Bittle scored the final 10 points to increase the visitors’ lead to 45-30 going into the final stanza. Bixby scored 14 third quarter points – 13 by Bittle.

Six quick points each by junior guard Dariann Myles and Bittle helped Bixby build up a 56-30 lead. Lady Spartan reserves played down the stretch.

“We won big and had some individual standouts but as a collective group I would have rather had more continuity. But, I’m not going to knock a big win,” Bixby head coach Tina Thomas said. “The first quarter was really good but then we got a little chaotic and a little rushed with what I was wanting to do.

“I wanted to have the opportunity to work on certain plays and execution but the girls got excited and wanted to score fast. But, I’m happy with them and happy everybody got in the game.”

Bittle led the Lady Spartans with a season-high 30 points. In two games last week, she scored 52 points, an average of 26 points per game. Myles chipped in with eight points followed by Williams with six, Kate Bradley, Tyree and Page with four each, Avery King and Kenedy Brown with two each and Sydnee Schovanec with one.

Last Tuesday, Bixby led 33-28 at halftime before steadily pulling away from the Lady Chieftains with a 22-8 scoring outburst in the fourth quarter.

Bittle led a balanced Bixby attack – featuring three players in double figures – with 22 points. Myles had a season-high 21 points, while Schovanec contributed 14 points. Other Lady Spartan scorers included Williams with six points, King and Tyree with four each, Brown with two and Bradley with one.

“I was really proud of the girls Tuesday night. Collectively, we had solid play from the post and the perimeter all in one game,” Coach Thomas said. “The cohesion against Sapulpa was better and that’s how we’ll need to play against the best teams.”

REGIONAL HOST – The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association recently rewarded Bixby as a host team for a Class 6A East Regional Tournament, Feb. 22-24.

Sand Springs plays Stillwater in the first round at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, followed by Bixby meeting Tulsa Union at 8 p.m.  in BHS’s Whitey Ford Field House. The two winners play for the regional championship on Saturday, Feb. 24, at 1:30 p.m.

“We’re tickled pink about hosting a regional. It surprised me a little because there were four or five teams in the mix. I thought we should but I have a biased view,” Coach Thomas said.

“It’s tough playing Union this coming Tuesday night and then turning around and playing them again Thursday (Feb. 22) in the regional. We want to use the two games next week to fine tune for the regional.”
