Lady Spartans Emerge Victorious Twice Last Week

By Ron Holt

Twice last week, Bixby High’s 13th-ranked Lady Spartan basketballers found themselves involved in games that were up for grabs in the final minute.

Twice, Bixby turned in key plays late to emerge victorious – defeating Union, 45-42, last Tuesday (Jan. 9) and going on the road to defeat Broken Arrow, 38-35, last Friday (Jan. 12).

The Lady Spartans, 11-3 on the season, return to action Tuesday (Jan. 16) when the Muskogee Lady Roughers visit Whitey Ford Field House, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Union went on a 9-0 run late in the first quarter to lead Bixby, 10-9, but the Lady Spartans rallied to lead 23-17 at the halftime break. In the third stanza, Bixby built an 11-point lead and led by 10 points late in the period before the Lady Redskins outscored the hosts 5-2 down the stretch to trim the deficit to 36-33 going into the final quarter.

Union tied the game at 38-all early in the fourth frame and led 42-41 with 1:12 remaining in the game. Down the stretch, Bixby senior Maddie Bittle converted a layup off a pass from teammate Kate Bradley for a 43-42 BHS lead.

Bixby relied on key plays late as junior Sydnee Schovanec took a charge with 52.2 seconds showing and Savanna Stout grabbed a rebound after a missed Bixby free throw to set up the game’s final points – two free throws by guard Dariann Myles with 23.7 seconds left. UHS misfired on a three-pointer and jumper in the final seconds.

Bittle paced Bixby’s balanced attack with 11 points while senior Sarah Tyree finished with 10 points – eight in the third quarter. Myles chipped in with nine points, Schovanec and Landry Williams each contributed six points, Kenedy Brown two and Stout one.

“Tyree came up big in the third quarter, first because of her teammates getting her the ball and because she rebounded like a beast,” Bixby head coach Tina Thomas said. “Schovanec took that huge charge late and Dariann Myles hit the two big free throws. We had moments of greatness and moments where we looked terrible but the girls made the plays late.”

Against Broken Arrow, the Lady Spartans struggled offensively in the first half, scoring only four points in the second quarter while trailing the Lady Tigers 18-13 at intermission. The Lady Spartans finally solved the offensive problems in the fourth quarter to pull away for their second win of the season over BA.

Schovanec led Bixby in scoring with 15 points. Bittle added eight points, Bradley and Tyree six each and Myles three.

“We shot poorly the first three quarters. We only scored 19 points and we matched that in the fourth quarter,” Coach Thomas noted. “The girls’ sheer determination to win the game came alive and the defensive pressure caused BA turnovers.

“A key basket was a three-pointer by Dariann Myles to take the lead with 1:38 left and then clutch free throws by freshman Kate Bradley and Maddie Bittle when BA was forced to foul sealed the win.”
